Finally Its weekend, after a wholly packed and strenuous week of intermingled daunting tasks between workplace schedules and deadlines, home management crisis and efficiencies, and indeed personal and social goals responsibilities; urgh! Its finally time to take a short time out.

But whoever says it’s a short time out, come on, workplace residues require attention lest your loyalty gets scoffed soonest, junior and his siblings actually just got their own time out for torturous demands, and who says hubby is ever left out of the equation.

You are currently on a call from dad about a current discrepancy that needs your urgent attention, how it kinda relate to the yet inconclusive emotional banter you had last night with hubby.  wow! You have probably heard about the mental health campaign. If you have not then you would probably ask me what that’s about.

Quite factually, before now, people do not take their mental health seriously. The only thing we cared about, most especially as mothers was our physical health. But in recent times, with different campaigns here and there, on our timelines and newsfeeds, the importance of mental health has now become as paramount as physical health, with the emergence of a variety of advocacies and approaches on how you can take care of yourself mentally.

The importance of treating mental health has become a well- accepted principle. And generally, it’s becoming less of a taboo to talk about therapy and mental illness openly.

According to report from The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, over 50 percent of all people who die by suicide suffer from major depression. If one includes alcoholics who are depressed, this figure rises to over 75 percent.

As statistics will have it, 25 million Americans suffer from depression each year. In April 2020, a young female poet identified as Adeleke Rachel Tioluwani committed suicide due to depression.

  • Value yourself:

There is one thing every woman who wishes to take care of herself mentally need to do: accept who they are. And this brings us closer to the concept of self love.

Treat yourself with kindness and respect, and avoid self-criticism. Make time for your hobbies and favorite projects, or broaden your horizons. And always remember, its you first!

  • Accept who you are:

More like the first tip above, this is about accepting that you’re the best version of yourself. It’s much healthier to accept that you’re unique than to wish you were more like someone else.

Feeling good about yourself boosts your confidence to learn new skills, visit new places and make new friends. When you have a great self-esteem, there isn’t much of a battle you wouldn’t fight off when life takes awkward turns.

  • Ask for help:

Not many want to admit to their mental health challenges. Most cases of depression ends up in suicide because the victims fails to open up to someone. Mental health challenges are not plagues.

None of us are superhuman. We all sometimes get tired or overwhelmed by how we feel or when things don’t go to plan.

We cannot disregard the tolls stress takes on our lives. We all get stressed up occasionally at some points in our lives: be it school, work, career, relationship etc.

However, you can periodically engage in the highlighted activities below to manage stress:

  1. Take a nature walk
  2. Play with your pet
  3. Engage your children in games and chores
  4. Try journal writing as a stress reducer
